PENguin wisdom: Unconventional, determined & Confident
“Resilience is all about overcoming the unexpected.” —Jamais Cascio
Penguins exhibit an intriguing kind of range, living half of their lives on land and half in the water, making them rather unconventional characters. Thriving even in extreme conditions, they don't give up easily, staying their course with steadiness, and always sharing their journeys with each other. They are, in fact, the most social of all birds, understanding the nature of living and learning in community in deep ways. Although unable to fly, they are not easily frightened, exhibiting a kind of understated confidence that signals being comfortable in their own being. Our clients have taken journeys that have brought them a similar kind of range, presence, and connection to others.

“The time I have spent with Cindy has changed my life. She has opened up my eyes to the power of being present and truly hearing others. These skills along with others have guided me to become a more influential leader. Her coaching was vital for me on managing a high profile brand launch project. She taught me how to effectively coordinate with multiple departments, personalities, and tasks to deliver a finished project on time. The time I have spent with Cindy has helped me in my personal and professional life to slow down, appreciate others, and grow as a person.”

“I worked with another coach before doing a search that led me to Cindy. The work we did together profoundly changed how I relate to the people in my company. I used to think in terms of building great systems and imagined I could just plug any person into them. It was a pretty impersonal approach, always focused on the hitting the numbers and being impatient with any kind of breakdown in achieving goals. I learned a lot about ‘leadership as relationship’ while working with Cindy privately. Still, one of the most meaningful experiences was the work we did with my leadership team that generated truly breakthrough results—during a difficult economy, in historically slow summer months, and through an acquisition process that might have otherwise created major distractions.”

“I have been very inspired by working with Cindy Marteney in personal coaching sessions and also by the leadership training and development work she has done with our Nordic Leadership Team. Cindy is unique in the way she meets people with presence and awareness and understands human behavior within organisations. She meets our leaders with the deepest respect for who they are and what they believe in. She creates a space together with them where real personal development is possible and which allows them to become authentic in their leadership roles.”

“Working with Cindy has been a transforming experience. Mindfulness training has empowered me to be more understanding of myself and of those around me. Her stepwise program of executive coaching has strengthened my leadership skills and, most importantly, my ability to connect with others to successfully pursue a shared vision of excellence in all we do.”

“In retrospect, it seems hard to believe that as a successful professional, I never thought to reexamine my views on my career and how I might best serve my patients and the public at-large. I owe Cindy much more than she gave me, and I will be grateful to her for the rest of my life. I highly recommend her services, as she can help people maximize their potential, in a humanitarian, and, I dare say, enlightened way.”

“Cindy Marteney’s leadership coaching helped me move from being a bogged-down accountant to a senior finance executive at a multi-hospital health system by age 32. As a numbers guy, I was not initially sold on topics like emotional intelligence, centering, and mindfulness. However, I engaged and quickly realized the pay-off. The positive changes in my relationships and results came in such a very short period of time. I am truly grateful for this work!”

“I sought out coaching with Cindy to help evolve more fully into my first senior executive role and to confront work/life balance issues that had the potential for burnout. I needed a new way to relate to my work, and I wanted to be a lot more joyful and relaxed in the process. Learning about mindfulness, developing a personal vision statement that guides me, and working in a way that integrates body, mind and spirit was truly life-changing.”

“Cindy Marteney helped me connect two different tracks in my professional life that had frustrated me for years. She saw my challenges and supported me from a deeper, more integral perspective. In our work, my angle on innovation became clear, and I am now taking steps I had long avoided—as an entrepreneur and also as a person. Having studied integral theory at university, I appreciate Cindy’s wonderfully American, highly pragmatic, and yet deeply sincere way of bringing this work to everyday life.”

“Prior to working with Cindy Marteney, I had little idea of what it truly means to be an effective leader. I was pretty focused on getting research programs funded and furthering basic science. Cindy opened my eyes to how important it is to personally connect with members of my faculty. This more engaged style of leadership has been very rewarding for me personally. I am pleased to report that productivity and team spirit have increased significantly. A recent five-year review of our department highlighted departmental leadership as highly effective and was characterized as ‘glowing’ by our Dean.”

“As a professor at Copenhagen Business School, I very much appreciate Cindy Marteney’s ability to simultaneously engage students intellectually, emotionally and practically. Cindy is a highly-valued guest lecturer in my leadership course for graduate students, where she makes narrative approaches to leadership come alive and gives students a real taste of, and for, leadership development. She is simply fabulous at holistic integration.”

“Throughout my years working at IBM in innovation, I went through various coaching programs, and I knew what I wanted to change but for a long time I didn’t know how. I have been impressed with how fast Cindy Marteney helped me reach clarity and make progress. Cindy has a great talent for helping people focus on what really matters—both in language and in practice. It’s great to have her at my side.”
