Who we are

Cindy Marteney

Executive Coach and Founder of The Marteney Group

Cindy Marteney is known for rapidly creating trust and momentum with high-profile clients, who value her practical wisdom and deeply relational approach to leadership. They feel deeply seen and enjoy the sense of humor Cindy brings to navigating the many tangles in life as well as leadership.

Cindy’s work has an alchemical quality. Her signature specialty? Helping leaders extend their own work to others and in ways that deepen relationships while supporting transformation. Cindy’s clients frequently bring what they learn into their personal lives, sharing touching stories of including friends, parents, and even children in their journeys.  With decades of experience, Cindy has worked across industries that span academic medicine, healthcare, high tech, aerospace, construction, and non-profits. She specializes in working with university leaders and has enjoyed a strong, referral-based business for the past twenty-five years.

  • Her career began in the U.S. Navy as a Russian linguist and intelligence analyst, where she earned the Navy Achievement Medal for discovering a “change to the order of battle.” Her knack for seeing beyond the obvious has been a defining feature of her career. She worked as a total quality management facilitator at Hanscom Airforce base, in marketing services while supporting rapid growth at Synetics and at Lotus/IBM. She also grew and sold a successful family business.

She holds an M.A. in Political Science from Claremont Graduate University and certified as an Integral Coach through New Ventures West, where she has served as faculty and mentored coaches in the U.S., U.K., and Denmark. She is certified as a Somatic Leadership Coach through the Strozzi Institute. She has studied the Enneagram extensively, which informs each of the modules in her year-long programs. She created her Three Pillars of Leadership model, which frames explorations of competencies that support a leader’s journey.

A long-time Zen student, Cindy hosts drop-in meditation circles for friends and clients, inviting explorations of paradoxical teaching stories. Living in Sonoma County, California, she enjoys hosting friends from around the world, taking her talkative Siamese cats out on hikes in a special backpack, playing tennis (and Scrabble when she can find people who still play), and hearing stories from people she meets while traveling.

Jessica Ivey-Thomas

Executive Coach

Jessica Ivey-Thomas is known for transforming the difficult to playful. She brings an interactive approach to building emotional intelligence in her clients, emphasizing personal and relational practices that support greater empathy, compassion, and connection, even in times of conflict. Trained extensively in the Enneagram as well as the somatic elements of leadership, Jessica is creative in not only helping clients notice and begin to work with the ways they get “off center" and show signs of stress, but also to observe others’ non-verbal cues more sensitively. She helps clients infuse an element of playfulness into their strategy, believing that life is meant to be lived to its fullest.

Her Enneagram and leadership training allow her to help clients recognize signs of stress and non-verbal cues--so they can respond in more attuned ways.

  • Jessica has worked with physician leaders in academic medicine, researchers in epidemiology, software architects in healthcare data companies, and directors of leadership development, operations, and marketing in high tech companies. She has conducted in-depth Leadership 360 surveys for top executives and leaders in medicine, high tech, construction, and aerospace.

In business, she has been responsible for teams of executive leadership coaches, instructors and managers in private firms and tech start-ups, overseeing operations, recruitment, hiring, performance feedback, and conflict management issues across a broad geography. As a Coaching Operations Manager, she has managed top leadership coaches supporting C-Suite coaching engagements for clients ranging from Sephora, LinkedIn, Lululemon, and Steph Curry’s non-profit.

Jessica has been engaged in competitive sports throughout her life, both as an award-winning soccer and lacrosse player and as a coach for challenging inner-city teams, where building trust is an essential and ongoing practice. She naturally understands team dynamics and the interplay of different personalities under pressure and has learned creative ways to bring out each individual’s best efforts and to create team cohesion.

Jessica has a B.S. in public health and psychology, is certified as an Integral Coach through New Ventures West and has studied extensively the Enneagram Institute's methodology. She also is on the faculty with New Ventures West mentoring coaching students through their certification process and training. Jessica practices what she empowers others to learn by continuing to grow. Her repertoire includes meditation, yoga, CrossFit, traveling, exploring nature, and other mindfulness-based practices.

She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her wife and two dogs.
